BYU becomes independent

The BYU Cougars have left the Mountain West Conference to become independent in an effort to promote Mormonism.

With the move, BYU would be independent in football but would rejoin the Western Athletic Conference in all other sports.

When in-state rival Utah left the conference for the Pac-10 earlier this summer, BYU started exploring the possibility of becoming independent.

The Cougars were disappointed that they were never given an invitation to the Pac-10 or the Big-12. (Read More…)

Fredette coming back

The BYU Cougars received some good news with the announcement that star Jimmer Fredette is withdrawing his name from the NBA Draft and returning to school.

Fredette carried BYU to the NCAA tournament last year and a first round upset of the Florida Gators.

Declaring for the draft allowed Fredette to work out for scouts and coaches and get a better idea of where he would be selected if he went to the NBA.

Fredette was not sold on where he would be drafted, which comes as little surprise considering all of the underclassmen that have declared this year.

He can now return to college for his senior season and possibly help the Cougars get even further in next year’s NCAA tournament.

Fredette declares for draft

BYU Cougars star guard Jimmer Fredette has declared himself for the NBA Draft but will not hire an agent

By not hiring an agent, Fredette gives himself the opportunity to return to school next season.

The junior will now be able to attent pre-draft camps with scouts and work out for NBA teams.

Fredette became a household name in the NCAA tournament after a marvelous performance in a first-round victory over the Florida Gators.

If he did remain in the draft, he would be projected as a late first-round selection.

BYU holds off Florida in 2OT to advance in NCAAs

By Bud L. Ellis

Finally, after seeing a 13-point lead evaporate to force overtime, and that five minutes of extra tension give way to more free basketball, Jimmer Fredette pushed Brigham Young over the top.

Fredette knocked down two 3-pointers in double overtime, part of a 37-point command performance Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. It was just enough, the Cougars pulling away from Florida for a 99-92 victory.

The win moved BYU into the second round of the tournament for the first time in 17 years. Michael Loyd Jr. scored 26 points in support of Fredette, who topped 30 points for the third consecutive game.

BYU looked like it would cruise in this one, building a 59-46 lead with a little more than nine minutes left in regulation. But the Gators fought back to force overtime, and had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation and at the conclusion of the first overtime.

In the second overtime, Fredette hit a 3-pointer with 2:42 left, pushing BYU’s lead to 90-83. His 3-pointer 90 seconds later put the game away for the Cougars.

BYU, Oregon State to square off in Vegas

The BYU Cougars might want to buy a time share in Las Vegas at this rate; for the fifth straight year, they’ll be playing in the Las Vegas Bowl. This year, they’ll take on the Oregon State Beavers of the Pac-10.

The game, which has already sold out, will feature two ranked teams for the first time in its history, with the Cougars ranked No. 15 and Beavers right behind at No. 16.

The game will be the last in quarterback Max Hall’s storied career, but he’ll face a tough test going up against Oregon State. Mike Riley’s teams have traditionally gotten stronger as the season has gotten deeper into winter. But while no time is a good time to face Oregon State in the postseason, BYU might be catching its opponent at its most opportune time. The Beavers are coming off a devastating loss at bitter rival Oregon, in a game in which the winner won the conference title and a bid to the Rose Bowl.

Still, the Cougars will have to contend with the talented Rogers brothers duo, as well as unheralded-but-exceptional quarterback Sean Canfield.
